Places to visit

Corfu has so many beautiful places to visit it is impossible to name them all but we would love to give you some suggestions! Corfu Town The old town (with its Venetian style) has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007 and is a great place to discover. The Old Fortress, the New Fortress and the Saint Spyridon church are just a few places that you must visit while in town! Make your way through the small streets in the old town and do shopping in the tourist stores. Stop at the Saint Spyridon church. It still houses the remains of Saint Spyridon. These remains are still carried around the town of Corfu 4 times a year to celebrate his miracles. Have a walk at the Esplanade that lies between the old town of Corfu and the Old Fortress. Here you will find Liston, an impressive building that now houses cafes and restaurants. It’s a perfect place to do some ‘people watching’ while refueling your energy. Achilleion Palace The Achilleion palace was built in 1890 by Empress Elisabeth from Austria, also known as Sissi. It is located at Gasstouri, about 10km south of Corfu Town. The name Achilleion was given to the palace because of Sissi’s passion towards mythological hero Achilles. She decorated the palace herself with art pieces from Greek mythology and history. It’s surrounded by beautiful gardens and stunning view. Kanoni & Pontikonissi Kanoni is located just south of Corfu Town and offers a great point to spot the airplanes landing and taking off from Corfu Airport. Walk onto the pedestrian bridge and the planes will fly right over your head. From Kanoni you can see the Pontokinisi island. In summer, small boats depart from the port at Kanoni and will take you there. The island is uninhabited and features the chapel of ‘Pantokrator’ that is only open for visitors at August 6th. Pontikonisi means mouse island in Greek. Make sure to also visit the white Vlacherna monastery (1682) while you are here. Paleokastritsa In and around the village of Paleokastritsa you will find some of the most beautiful beaches, golfs and crystal clear water of Corfu. It is a small village located on the North West coast of the island and a must visit! Boats and canoes can be rented on almost all of the beaches and tours can be made with a glass bottom boat and into the nearby caves. The Paleokastritsa monastery on the hilltop was first founded in 1225 and has beautiful features in and outside.
