Mythologie The Griekse naam voor Corfu is Kerkyra. In de Griekse mythologie werd Poseidon (god van de zee) verliefd op de nimf Korkyra. Hij ontvoerde haar en bracht haar naar het eiland dat we kennen als Corfu. Hun zoon Phaiax stichtte de Faiaken, de eerste bewoners van het eiland. In Dorisch dialect werd de naam Korkyra uiteindelijk Kerkyra. Corfu wordt ook genoemd in de Odyssee van Homerus als Scheria. Als schipbreukeling spoelt Odyssee aan op Scheria en wordt hij gewekt door de lach van prinses Nausicaä. Zij brengt hem naar het paleis waar koning Alkinoös hem een schip schenkt om terug te keren naar Ithaka. De Durrells De Durrells is een Britse komedie/drama serie die wordt geproduceerd door de BBC. De serie is gebaseerd op de autobiografische boeken van Gerard Durrell en gaan over de jaren (1935-1939) die hij met zijn familie op Corfu doorbracht. De serie wordt op locatie gefilmd en sommige van deze locaties zijn te bezoeken. Corfu Beer De eerste ale brouwerij van Griekenland bevindt zich in het dorpje Arillas. Corfu Beer wordt gebrouwen zonder conserveringmiddelen en hebben verschillende smaken. Deze brouwerij is zeker een bezoekje waard! Kumquat Fruit De kumquat is een citrusvrucht die oorspronkelijk uit China komt en in 1846 door plantkundige Sidney Merlin naar Corfu gebracht werd. De vruchten zien eruit als een kleine sinaasappeltjes en hebben een zoetzure smaak. Ze worden op Corfu verkocht als likeur, snoepjes, jam en zelfs verwerkt in ijs. Universiteit e eerste moderne universiteit in Griekenland (de Ionische Academy) werd gesticht in Corfu in 1824. In 1864, toen de Ionische eilanden toetraden tot het Griekse koninkrijk werd de academie weer gesloten. Een deel van de bibliotheek en personeel werden naar Athene verplaats naar de nieuwgebouwde Universiteit van Athene. Het gebouw waar de Ionische Academie gevestigd was bestaat nog steeds. De Ionische Universiteit zoals wij die vandaag de dag kennen opende zijn deuren in 1985 en heeft 3 faculteiten waaronder Geschiedenis en Muziek. Pasen op Corfu Orthodox Pasen is het grootste feest van het jaar op Corfu. Duizenden mensen uit Griekenland maar ook uit andere landen komen er speciaal voor naar Corfu. Het is een bijzondere ervaring en een hele belevenis.
- On Palm Sunday there is a procession of the Relic of Saint Spyridon who is believed to preformed a miracle and freed the island of the deadly plague in 1629.
- On Holy Wednesday a ceremony takes place to give salvation and relief people from worries and negative thoughts. During this ‘Chrysoma’ the priest makes a cross on peoples wrists and forehead, using oil and cotton.
- On Holy Thursday the 12 gospels (the service of the Holy passion) are read. At the ringing of the first bell eggs are dyed red. The red symbolizes the blood of Christ and the eggshell his tomb. The cracking of the eggs (early Sunday morning) resembles the resurrection of Christ.
- Holy Friday is the day of the epitaphs. The procession will start in the afternoon and carriers on late into the night.
- On Holy Saturday, at 6AM, the church of Panagia Xenon performs the reenactment of the earthquake that followed the resurrection of Christ. At 9AM another procession of the relic of Saint Spyridon is held to remember he saved Corfu from the famine that struck the island in 1553. Later that morning, at 11AM, the first resurrection is announced. Church’s bells ring and clay pots (small ones and big ones) filled with water are thrown from windows and balcony’s and smash onto the streets at Spianada making a lot of noise. This event is received with a applause and cheering from the thousands of people watching down below. Later on Saturday evening churches hold masses and close to midnight candles are lit. At midnight the fireworks mark the resurrection of Christ and the words ‘Christos Anesti’ (Christ has risen) and response ‘Alithos Anesti’ (He truly has) are spoken to each other. After church service families celebrate with dinner at home. The eggs painted red on Thursday are used to play a game called Tsougrisma. Each person at the table holds an egg and tries to crack another person’s egg (symbolizing the resurrection).
